Abstract

A The Brazilian Amazon, a region of inestimable natural riches, paradoxically faces a reality marked by profound inequalities and structural violence. This article analyzes this issue through the lens of the theories of justice proposed by Amartya Sen and John Rawls, complemented by insights from Brazilian authors. Sen introduces the concept of inequality beyond income, emphasizing substantive freedoms and human capabilities. His approach to "instrumental freedoms" highlights the relevance of protective security, social opportunities, transparency guarantees, and political freedoms for development. In the Amazon, the deprivation of these freedoms is evident, generating structural violence that impedes the full exercise of individual liberties. Official data reveals high rates of poverty, malnutrition, infant mortality, and lack of access to basic services, evidencing systematic injustice and exclusion. Rawls' theory of justice as fairness proposes equitable principles that could be applied, guaranteeing basic rights and freedoms, equal opportunities, and income distribution according to the difference principle. Brazilian authors complement this analysis, emphasizing the importance of considering the region's specificities and promoting social participation in constructing alternatives. It is concluded that the structural violence in the Amazon stems from deprivations of substantive freedoms and capabilities, demanding concrete actions based on principles of justice to combat the profound inequalities that plague the region. In this article, the deductive method was used, starting with an analysis of the topic supported by bibliographic research, official data collection, and a review of selected literature, with the aim of gaining an understanding of the presented research problem.
