Abstract

This article examines the incarceration of women in the Latin American region from a critical feminist approach. It starts with the central issue of how incarceration reflects and perpetuates patriarchal structures and social control institutions. To address this issue, the study employs a deductive method and an exploratory approach based on a bibliographic review. The general objective, in turn, is to reveal the gender particularities in the Latin American prison context and highlight the importance of feminist criminology. Additionally, the research is divided into two parts of development, corresponding to specific objectives: (1) to analyze the role of women in Latin American society; (2) to examine feminist criminology as a means to reveal the particularities of female incarceration in Latin America. It is concluded that prisons function as mechanisms of social control that reinforce inequalities and oppression, making feminist criminology essential for transforming this reality by suggesting a prison environment that respects the rights and needs of women.
